85 Forward                    

“Gregg Day” sale of all classes of breeding rams and sheep was deemed a great success with a great atmosphere and buzz around the market in which of everything could have been sold. The sale was kindly sponsored by WE & MG Redfearn Ltd, Fencing Supplies and Agri Lloyd who were represented Aine Devlin.

The sale commenced with the breeding rams. The second show and sale of Swaledale breeding was judged by Seth Guy and Laurie Blades and we thank these two young shepherds for there time and expertise. The champion rosette was awarded to the first prize shearling from R Hutchinson & Son, Valley Farm sired by the Neil Richardson tup that went onto sell for £1200. The sale topped £2000 for a much-admired powerful Swaledale shearling from RT Tennant, Kilnsey. Other leading Swaledale shearling prizes where £850 from JR Addison & Son, Bowes and £750 from G Calvert & Sons, Keld.  Swaledale aged tups topped at £400 from JH Capstick, Ravenstonedale. Plenty of Swaledale shearling tups selling between £250 and £550 with all Swaledale tups forward averaged £273.47.

Leicester tups in demand and more could have been sold to the advantage of vendors with plenty in the market looking for tups. Leading the wat at £1200 was a powerful shearling tup from Rachel Bland, Gaisgill with tup lambs from the same home selling to £900 and £600. Other leading prices were £880 from DT Dinsdale & Son, Aysgarth followed by £850 from AT Pratt, Hawes. All Leicester tups forward averaged £713.

The continental tup trade topped at £1050 from F & MP Allinson & Son, Co Durham for a powerful Texel x Beltex shearling. Beltex tup shearlings sold to £700 and £650 from A Ryder, Carlisle. Suffolk tups topped at £670 from L Bosomworth, Northallerton.

EWES & GIMMER SHEARLINGS

189 forward comprising of 132 Ewes & 57 Shearlings

Breeding sheep were in demand and keenly sort after, especially quality sheep. Suffolk gimmer lambs from L Bosomworth, Northallerton selling to £260 and £250. The consignment of Texdale gimmer shearlings from JG Brunton, Marske sold to £215, £200 and £195. Strong correct Swaledale ewes were in demand topping at £160 from J Alderson, Low Row followed by others to £155 from T & G Farrow, Richmond. Swaledale Gimmer shearlings from JR & JF Worthington, Ramsbottom sold to a top of £150. Correct Swaledale ewes often sold between £100 and £130.

GIMMER LAMBS

451 Forward

Mule gimmer lambs a brisk trade selling to a top of £165 from JC Fawcett, Hawes followed by others to £155 from J & SE Bainbridge, Newsham, £145 from A & L Huddleston and £142 from D Hodgson, Askrigg. All mule gimmer lambs forward averaged £98.56 with all lambs forward runners as to be expected at a late sale. Swaledale gimmer lambs sold to a strong trade topping at £98 from TM Barrass & Son, Walden followed by £95 from G Harker & Son, Arkengarthdale and D & DR Alderson, Gunnerside with plenty of pens of strong lambs selling in the region of ninety pound and all forward averaging £73.30.
